Meet the Park family, the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim family, rich in street smarts but not much else.
Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide "indispensable" luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household.Cast of Parasite: Red Carpet Interview - 26th Annual SAG Awards - TNT
When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims' newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks.
By turns darkly hilarious and heart-wrenching, Parasite showcases a modern master at the top of his game. He is the ultimate success story and the perfect contrast to Ki-taek: he runs his own company, has bought a luxurious house designed by a famous architect, and lives with his beautiful wife and cute daughter and son.
Busy at work, he leaves the day-to-day running of the house to his wife, and is never less than courteous to the people who work in his home. Yeon-kyo is the wife of Mr. She is responsible for her children's education, the hiring of staff, and all other household matters.
Her biggest worries are for her second child Da-song, who seems to be an art genius, but who is also unfocused and eccentric. Da-hye is a pretty second-year high school student who gets Ki-woo as an English tutor.
With her younger brother Da-song getting all the attention from her parents, she feels upset and suffers from lack of affection. When her new tutor Ki-woo arrives, she feels a special fascination for him from their first meeting.
Da-song is Da-hye's younger brother, a second grade elementary school student. A member of the Cub Scouts, he loves camping and walkie-talkies, and is a fanatic for all things related to Native Americans. His mother believes he is a genius artist, but because of his eccentric and wild nature, none of his art tutors last more than a month. Ki-taek is the head of the household for a family of four unemployed adults. Without any job or backup plan, he absorbs the criticisms of his wife Chung-sook while remaining calm and at peace.
After numerous business failures he is skeptical about the need to formulate grandiose plans, but when his son Ki-woo becomes a tutor at a rich household, he starts to dream of being able to eat and live like normal people.
Ki-woo is the elder child of Ki-taek and Chung-sook. Having failed the university entrance exam four times, he passes his days without a job, doing part-time work or earning money on the side.
Always positive by nature, he is recommended by his friend who attends a prestigious university to a tutoring job at the Park home. Carrying a fake diploma, as well as his family's hopes for a regular income, he visits the Park family home for an interview. Ki-jung is the youngest child of Ki-taek and Chung-sook. Having failed to get into art school, and without enough money to pay for prep courses, she is unemployed like the rest of her family.
Nonetheless her superior Photoshop skills enable her to make a perfectly forged diploma for Ki-woo's job interview.Wish List.

Jeong Esuz.Back in May, writer-director Bong Joon-ho faced a tsunami of rapturous reviews, surfing to the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his pitch-black comedic thriller, Parasite. Parasite finally made its North American landfall at the prestigious Telluride Film Festival in early September, where it sold out screenings.
By the time the allegorical thriller, about a poor Seoul family that manages to infiltrate a very rich one to unexpected consequences, debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival a few days later, the movie boasted a 99 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating, as well as a hive of Oscar buzz. And yet, despite the intense and sustained Film Twitter interest — telegraphing a critical consensus that the less you know about the film before seeing it, the better — Parasite could only be found in precisely three theaters in the United States upon its October 11 release.
Somehow, Parasite felt both suspiciously ubiquitous and conspicuously absent at the same time. Its upstart specialty distributor, Neon behind such films as Three Identical StrangersThe Beach Bumand I, Tonyacould have taken a different route and attempted to push Parasite out wide over its theatrical debut.
So why the slow-burn release? On Thursday night, Parasite will expand into eight more theatrical markets across the country, screening at two or three theaters in each of those cities in addition to several more theaters in L.
By mid-November, the movie, which is already a colossal hit in South Korea, will branch out into between 50 and 75 other American cities. And by the middle of next month, Parasite will be programed nationwide, playing in theatrical markets. That kind of North American platform release is a go-to for foreign films and movies intended for art-house cinemas. Despite the haste of release and relative lack of promotional pregaming, Allison Janney claimed an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, while Robbie earned a nomination for Best Actress.
By contrast, the studio has been working since May to figure out how to best promote Parasite down the awards-corridor stretch. Cutting through the white noise out of the South by Southwest Film Festival with almost uniformly glowing reviews and gigantic social-media exposure in March, the female-fronted coming-of-age comedy was hustled into 2, theaters domestically by its distributor, Annapurna, ahead of Memorial Day to dissatisfactory effect.
Or kick it to the festivals and go slow. To go wide seemed crazy. Already a subscriber? Log in or link your magazine subscription. Account Profile. Sign Out. Woo-sik Choi and Ji-so Jung in Parasite. So how do critics convey when a film truly is unexpectedly, brilliantly unpredictable in ways that feel revelatory?
Just trust me on this one. It is a tonal juggling act that first feels like a satire—a comedy of manners that bounces a group of lovable con artists off a very wealthy family of awkward eccentrics. Can the poor really just step into the world of the rich? The film constantly threatens to come apart—to take one convoluted turn too many in ways that sink the project—but Bong holds it all together, and the result is breathtaking. Kim Ki-woo Choi Woo-sik and his family live on the edge of poverty.
They fold pizza boxes for a delivery company to make some cash, steal wi-fi from the coffee shop nearby, and leave the windows open when the neighborhood is being fumigated to deal with their own infestation. Why he trusts Kim Ki-woo given what we know and learn about him is a valid question. The young man changes his name to Kevin and begins tutoring Park Da-hye Jung Zisowho immediately falls for him, of course.
Kevin has a much deeper plan. Before long, mom and dad are in the Park house too, and it seems like everything is going perfectly for the Kim family. The Parks seem to be happy too. And then everything changes. Stick with me here. I tried to avoid it. This time it's true. Brian Tallerico is the Editor of RogerEbert. Song Kang-Ho as Kim Ki-taek. Lee Sun-Kyun as Park Dong-ik.
